Positive Behavioral Support
Positive Behavioral Suport is a school wide initiative to promote positive behavior and to decrease negative behavior. There are three tiers that are implemented in PBS, very similarly to RTI. PBS focuses on proactive approaches to school wide behavior management.
PBS focuses on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors in all parts of the school. These behaviors are taught, posted, and modeled by teachers and administrators.
The first step in PBS is to get the commitment from adults affiliated with the school to be trained and to form a PBS team. The next step would be to identify the positive behaviors you want to see in the school and to teach those behaviors. Logically deciding the consequences and reinforcement strategies comes next. After this has been implemented data collection can begin.
Tier One focuses on reducing future behavioral issues. Similar to RTI this tier teaches students positive behaviors and the expectations that accompany those behaviors. There are reinforcements and consequences when these behaviors expectations are met or are broken. PBS mandates that there needs to be effective instruction of behaviors inside the classroom but also outside of the classroom, and that in order for these behaviors to be implemented there needs to be adequate supervision outside of the classroom.
Tier Two focuses on reducing behavior that is already occurring by teaching social skills, increasing academic support, and providing classroom management support while emphasizing the replacement of suspensions.
Tier Three focuses on reducing the intensity and severity of the current behavioral problems. Tier three does that by implementing increasingly intensive academic support and by implementing Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavioral Intervention Plans.
